JetBlue Airways Corp., the Forest Hills-based low-cost carrier, said today it has won a three-way competition to serve the highly-coveted Cancun market, beating out rivals Delta Airlines and charter company USA3000 Airlines.

Jenny Dervin, a JetBlue spokeswoman, said that the airline applied for the Kennedy Airport-Cancun route in early December, after the U.S. and Mexico agreed to expand service between the two destinations. Previously, only American Airlines and Continental flew from the New York metro area to Cancun.

Dervin said that JetBlue was informed by the U.S. Department of Transportation Wednesday night that its application had been approved.
